Carbon fibres are synthetic polymer fibres that are heated to high temperatures until they carbonize. The result is a black, extremely light and firm fibre with a tensile strength four times higher than the best ferrous alloys – at just a quarter of the weight. Another advantage is the high thermal stability.
To utilize these exceptional properties the carbon fibres must be embedded in a matrix material made of suitable thermoplastic or thermosetting synthetic material in the form of rovings, weaves or multiple layers of unidirectional strands. The material's main purpose is to transfer and distribute the forces that occur and for spatial fixation of the fibres.
A perfect fit for every use
Carbon fibres can be arranged for the respective load of a component. Thus it is possible to develop a material that is designed precisely for a specific application. Such components are extremely light, yet offer high tensile strength. Carbon offers much greater flexibility in the forming process. For example, the shape can be optimized for aerodynamics or improved power flow. The maximum tensile strength of carbon fibres in the direction of the fibre can be up to 5,400 MPa, depending on the type of fibre.
Our goal is intelligent lightweight construction – minimal component mass and a safe design are equally important in this respect. ax-lightness only uses carbon fibres that are manufactured according to DIN 65 147 T1 and T2 (aviation standard) and according to QSF-B guidelines (aviation quality assurance system).
From the carbon fork to the carbon handlebar to the complete carbon racing bike: ax-lightness from Upper Franconia, Germany is the number one manufacturer of lightweight bicycles and components thanks to the company's wide range of carbon products.
